A North Sea Crossing

Departure from Vlieland

The morning fog lifted just as we slipped our lines at 0800. A gentle southwest breeze promised good sailing conditions for the crossing.

The Passage

We set a course of 310° magnetic, keeping well clear of the TSS. The wind built steadily through the morning, and by noon we were making 6 knots under full sail.

The sea state remained moderate, with a long swell from the northwest. Visibility improved throughout the day, and we spotted several other yachts making the same crossing.

Arrival

We picked up a mooring in Whitby at 1830, tired but satisfied after a textbook passage. The harbour master welcomed us with local knowledge about the best fish and chips in town.
